THE ANDRÉ DE GOUVEIA RESIDENCE

HISTORY

Financing from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

In 1960, José Henrique de Azeredo-Perdigao, the president of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal, committed to financing the construction of a residence in the Cité Internationale that would provide Portuguese students and researchers with accommodation to complement the Foundation’s work to support education through scholarships.

André de Gouveia, Portuguese humanism

Architect José Sommer-Ribeiro designed the house, and construction was completed in 1967. In 1972, the building was renamed in honour of André de Gouveia, a great Portuguese humanist of the 16th century who was head of Saint Barbara College and rector of the Sorbonne.

Newly renovated

The Fondation nationale, Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris together with the Foundation Gulbenkian asked architect Vincent Parreira to restore the building, which reopened in 2007, boasting new rooms and improved comfort throughout.
