Schooling of children

As soon as you arrive in France and have found accommodation, your children are eligible for a place in a French state school. The practical information below should help you to enrol your children in a school. Please do not hesitate to contact us should require further information.

Schooling

The “école maternelle” (kindergarten) and “primaire” (primary school) take children aged from 3-10. For all enrolment details, see our help leaflet: Kindergarten and primary school.

The “Collège” (secondary school) takes children aged from 11 to 15, the “lycée” (high school, sixth form) takes children aged from 16 to 18.
For all enrolment details, see our help leaflet: secondary and high school.

In France, the school year is from September to June. For pupils of collège and lycée age arriving in mid-year who do not speak French, you may have to wait a few weeks before they are placed in a class for non-French speakers.

For 0- to 3-years-old
In Paris, nursery (crèche) places for the under-3s are very difficult to obtain. However, when you apply for a place at a nursery via the PMI (Protection Maternelle et Infantile) you will be informed of alternatives such as registered childminders and crèches parentales (nurseries run by parents, baby-sitters) etc.

For all the practical information about the PMI you can go on the Ville de Paris website in French.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for further information regarding babby-sitters, activities for children, etc.
