House insurance is obligatory when renting from a private landlord. We also advise that you take out personal effects insurance if you are staying in accommodation at the Cité, in the event of accidental damage. If you haven’t done this yet, contact us for special discounted rates. |

Personal liability insurance |

Personal liability insurance covers the cost of all repairs to damage you may cause to others (by carelessness). It covers you, your partner and your children.

Driving Licence |
|
 |
|
If you hold a driving licence from a non-European country, and you intend to stay in France for more than a year, you must request a licence exchange in France during the first year of your stay. Failing this, you will be expected to re-sit a driving test in France after one year. For more information on this procedure, contact us.

International driving licence |

If you are coming to France for a short stay from a non-European Union country, you can apply for an international permit in advance. Find out about this in your home country. You must carry your valid driving licence with you as well as the international licence at all times. |

If you are coming to France with your car |
|
 |
|
Once you have arrived in France, you need to change your number plate. To find out more about this, please contact us as soon as possible as the process takes time. Before leaving, don’t forget to bring all the documents related to your car, including car insurance history and car ownership certificate. |

Income Tax |

Before leaving France, remember to declare all the income (in the form of a salary or grant) that you have received in France to the relevant tax office.
In May 2008, you have to declare your income for the year 2007. For more information consult our fact sheet : tax return.

The CAF (family allowance) |
|
 |
|
Depending on your income, you may be entitled to State assistance. This is known as “allocations familiales” (family allowance) which provide financial help for housing and/or your children. For more information, go to the site Caf.fr. |

You live at the Cité |
|
 |
|
You can open an account at the BNP-Paribas bank which is located in the International House. The agency is open Monday to Friday, 9h00 to 17h00. |
|
| |
|
You live outside the Cité |
|
 |
|
You can contact us and ask us to open a bank account for you near your residence or your place of work. If you need to transfer money a few days before your arrival, we can contact the bank and ask for an advanced opening of your account. For a short stay in France (less than six months), you will be able to have a checking account which will enable you to receive your wages and to withdraw cash directly at the ATM. |
